Free Wall Molding Planner: Plan & Measure Your Wall Before You Start

Planning wall molding is one of the most important parts of creating a finished, custom-looking wall. Before choosing your panel sizes or ordering molding, you’ll want to consider your wall dimensions, baseboards, furniture placement, outlets, switches, windows and the overall style you want to create.

To make the process easier, we created a free Wall Molding Project Planner you can print and use to plan your project before you begin.

How to use your Wall Molding Project Planner

1. Measure your wall

Start by recording your wall width and height. Measure in more than one location, especially in older homes where walls and ceilings may not be perfectly square.

2. Measure your baseboards

Record both the height and depth of your existing baseboards. This is especially important when you're planning full-wall molding or board and batten.

3. Choose your wall molding style

Decide which look works best for your room:

• Picture frame molding
• Half-wall molding
• Full-wall molding
• Board & batten
• Single-frame molding
• Double-frame molding
• Chair rail or dado rail

4. Sketch your wall

Use the large grid on your worksheet to draw the basic shape of your wall.

Mark anything your molding needs to work around, including windows, doors, outlets, switches and vents.

You don't need to be an artist — the goal is simply to get everything onto paper before deciding on your final panel layout.

5. Plan your panels

Once you've sketched the wall, experiment with the number and proportions of your panels.

Your panels don't necessarily need to be identical widths. A balanced layout that works with your furniture, doors, windows and other architectural features can often look better than dividing the wall into perfectly equal rectangles.

6. Take a photo of your wall

Before ordering, take a straight-on photo of the entire wall. This makes it much easier to visualize how your molding layout will interact with the rest of the room.
